Tanya these little fungi are still too immature to identify them, though potentially very interesting. It would be very interesting if you are able to take a photo as they become more mature. Or better still if you are able to scratch around the base of them to see if they are attached to a sclerotia please?! I suspect they may be one of the fire responsive fungi.

I was thinking they might be a little bit little. There was one that had started to grow but it was around a leaf and a little misinformed. I am happy to continue to take photos of them as I visit the site most days. I am also happy to scratch around the base and look for sclerotia, but I do not know what that is. If you tell me I will look.

Oops sorry about that. A sclerotia is a mass of sterile fungal tissue that is a resting stage for the fungus until conditions are suitable for the fungus to send up it's reproductive structure. With these 'fire responsive fungi' the pulse of heat and possiblly the chemical changes in the soil resulting from a fire trigger this response. The sclerotia, depending on the species, may range from what appears to be a thickened root to a small potatoe to a much larger structure - even as large as a small football!!
