There now seems to be several nests in this area. How far do the wasps travel to establish new nests?

The females travel to set up new nests in spring. In cold climates the old nests die out over winter. I’m not sure how far the females will travel before setting up a nest, but the wasps can forage up to 500m from their nests. Putting out traps in early spring to catch the females could be effective. Also killing any overwintering females you find, often hidden in leaf litter.
