Azolla filiculoides (Water Fern)

Distinguished from the more common Azolla pinnata by its less regular branching and the fact that the dangling roots do not have fine hairs radiating from them (in pinnata there are).

Although recorded here as non-invasive, both Azolla species can proliferate and cover the water surface, in warm conditions and nutrient enriched water. This may not be a problem unless it results in the water being de-oxygenated, or loss of habitat for aquatic fauna.
