Machiloides granulatus (Bristletail)

Along with the Silverfish (order Zygentoma), the Bristletails (order Archaeognatha) are the most primitive 'true insects'. They are a small group, with only five genera and ten species. They feed on algae and detritus.

Machiloides granulatus occurs in inland south-eastern Australia, and is usually seen (albeit rarely) on rocks near the ground.
