Looks like he's washed up in the low tide. Was definitely alive and breathing. We didn't disturb him. Hopefully he goes back out in high tide.

Octopus pallidus would have been my guess but I don't know enough about octopuses to be confident.

Thanks Jenny. Mandy from the Australian Museum emailed me and suggested it is probably Octopus australis, so I've added that as a new suggestion too.
