This is an unusually dark specimen. Even though these different variations are currently all lumped under the one species it is suspected that there may be more than one! These are mycorrhizal so there will be one or more nearby trees that will be benefiting by a partnership with this fungus. Did you notice if there were any Turpentines (Syncarpia glomulifera) nearby?
