Resembles a Christmas beetle (subfamily Rutelinae), but belongs to Dynastinae. An important distinguishing feature between the two subfamilies is in each tarsus: Rutelinae have the two claws unequal in size and individually movable, whereas Dynastinae have them equal and more or less fixed together.
In the Argentinian scarab, the long, thin tarsi are also distinctive; Christmas beetles have shorter, thicker tarsi and larger claws, needed to hang on to foliage in all weather conditions.
