Sorry you've stumped me with this one! Having pale gills and a ring(annulus) it's possible that it's an Amanita. Though the spores may be immature and may colour up as they mature. So I'll only be able to definitely id it to an 'Agaric - gilled fungus'. I like 'Handmaid's fungus'!! As it does have that look of nails infected by a fungus........

Thanks, Pam. I think it is immature, as it seems to be pushing its way through the soil? (and, apologies for my lack of clarity - The 'Handmaid' reference was to the Handmaid's Tale - the handmaid's wear hats similar in shape to this fungus, I thought?)

Yes I agree with you re the Handmaid's Tale hats. This fungus does look very like one of those, colour and all! Your specimen does appear to be either immature or has been stunted by the effort of getting through the soil.
