User's notes

A stretch of Wallagoot Lane roadside was covered in cobwebs on August 2nd, 2020. Closer inspection revealed hundreds (if not thousands) of little spiders all vying for positions on the high points of vegetation (a silk shrouded frond of Bracken Fern in the photograph). At these high points they were all tiptoeing and letting out threads of silk in an attempt to begin ballooning. The air was full of waving silk strands. All were attempting to take off, perhaps leaving Jellat flats due to the recent flooding. Several landed on the car in the time I spent photographing them. It was quite something to witness. They may have been adult spiders of small species, or spiderlings of larger species. I have called them spiderlings in the photo title. None were more than a few milimetres long. The ones in this photo looked like Wolf Spiders, while others looked like Jumping Spiders. I left Category 3 blank, a more precise id would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for confirming this species id. I hope you have seen the pictures from Longford, Victoria in today's Sun Herald (16-06-21). Dowd's Morass is just to the east of Longford. It must have flooded last week. Similar circumstances to what happened at Jellat last year.
