ACT Wildlife was notified of the Swan with net tangled on it seen from the bridge. Later on we saw a couple of people with large fishing poles and other fishing equipment walking towards the bridge (we were across on the walking path). Not sure why people are allowed to fish in here being a nature reserve.

It's great that you were able to help the swan. I think fishing is permitted only in certain parts of the reserve such as the silt trap (where this could have been swept down from) but even so it clearly has direct impacts on wildlife in the reserve.

That green mesh looks like the stuff used in the topsoil to hold Canturf together (not fishing equipment)

Didn't know about Canturf using mesh like that and have seen lots of Swans on Canturf at times. Thank you for making us aware of that. Sure does make it difficult with so much of this stuff around.

I agree with @Steve_Bok re the mesh, our previous owners had laid turf here and we have been digging up that nasty mesh for years. Not pleasant stuff.

Not sure about the legality of fishing, but I've seen people fishing from the bridge and nearby.

Surprised there is nothing on the new signs at the wetlands letting people know one way or the other and if so where they are only supposed to be fishing. However it is unfortunate that the mesh has come from another source that has to be worried about also. Feel so bad for the wildlife when this happens.

Yes it is a sad state of affairs for the wildlife and all the struggles humans have created for them. Again I agree with Alison, have seen people fishing from the bridge and general area. I guess fishing may actually help with removing some of the pest fish species that proliferate in the waterways around there, although a few here and there wouldn't really make much of a difference.
