One of our moderators Mark Hanlon, it was named after him so maybe he would be the best to ask about its rarity Michael. Mark is a nice bloke and easy to talk to.

Hi Michael, it certainly looks like it however there are a few other species that are vaguely similar. I’d be able to tell you in an instant if I could look at my collection however I’ve just landed in Africa and am not back in Perth for 3 weeks.
I can see the date the specimens were found but not a location. As far as I’m aware C. hanloni has only been caught around Nombinnie Nature Reserve and Yathong NR however I haven’t looked for it since about 2005. I’m sure it’s reasonably widespread in similar habitats.
The dates match, I’ve caught it mid September to early October. Cheers

Hi Mark. We may be in luck as the location is actually Yathong NR. Would that be enough info to confirm Stuart's suggestion?

Hi Michael, hi all, this is actually Castiarina markhanloni Barker, not Castiarina hanloni Barker which has only been recorded from Point Culver in the far SE of WA, where Mark Hanlon discovered this species, and from near Talia on the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula, where I encountered it with some friends in October 2004 (thus a huge range extension eastwards for this species). I would also like to advise that the subject species, Castiarina markhanloni, is not rare, you just have to be in its range at the right time of the season, in a reasonably good season, and look on the right flowers when in peak bloom, which are Micromyrtus sessilis, and Gaudium coriaceum (formerly Leptospermum coriaceum). By the way, when I type the name Castiarina markhanloni into the ID box and hit enter, nothing happens.

Aah yes Allan! Of course it is…. that’s what happens when you haven’t looked at one in 20 years !
I would’ve picked it up when checking my collection to save my embarrassment but unfortunately I’m a long way away atm.
