It doesn’t look like a fern, and it’s not like any fern I’ve seen in the Canberra region

I disagree, this is a fern though not a Canberran one (location is in the blue mountains). It's something in the blechnum group.

Yes. On my phone the vein details were blurred. My Mac shows them clearly. Could well be a juvenile B. wattsii
