@MattM this is in fact scented (I've gone back to check), so I'm not feeling confident about C moschata. As expected for C cucullata, it smells faintly lemony. Have also added images to the sighting showing the labellum/calli more clearly.
I can't comment on the smell, but if it is C. cucullata then it is quite atypical for the species. C. cucullata has much more colourful labellum calli and the labellum tip tends to be quite colourful as well. Personally I think it looks like the labellum has turned into a raspberry. See this for an example: Caladenia cucullata (Lemon Caps)
@MattM could it potentially be a hybrid between the two? I know C moschata occurs here, but I don't usually see them here until mid November, and they've never smelled lemony. Perhaps it's just a weirdly scented C moschata, but it doesn't feel right.
I don't believe it is a hybrid. It looks like a normal C. moschata to me. The labellum is fairly broad, the calli are short, and the labellum lacks the bright red colour. C. moschata is in the peak of its flowering period at the moment with hundreds of plants flowering all over Canberra. I also saw some at the top of Tallaganda on Monday. C. cucullata also tends to begin flowering a bit later than C. moschata.
@MattM righto, I'll defer to your knowledge. Worth noting though, in case you're unfamiliar with the area, that peak flowering periods for Captains Flat are not the same as for Canberra, or even for Tallaganda. We have a unique microclimate here which tends to put our peaks for most species a good 2-4 weeks behind other nearby areas. Thanks again!
