It could be, but I can't discount similar species without a better Idea of the scale. You put the plants at 1-5m in the sighting description, could you give me a more accurate estimate.

Good luck! I'll also get you to photograph the pith (by spilt a culm lenghtways). It is the surest way to ID this genus.
