Look at the hind leg in the second photo. Rather than long hairs for carrying pollen she has a wide shiny dish (just before the very narrow end of the foot) on which she sticks the pollen. In this part of the country, only Apis mellifera and Tetragonula carbonaria have hind legs like this.

Thank you Michael for the extra info. I can exactly what you mean. I need to learn to upload my photos straight away, otherwise I can't remember what size the insect was. I guess the fact that it's a reasonably clear photo should have alerted me to the fact that it wasn't a smaller bee. My camera really isn't good for photographing the littlies.
