Thanks, @Span102! The fly didn't seem concerned about my presence - and it has a tenacious grip on plants. I saw it about a week later on a branch of Indigofera australis in our garden. A light breeze began whipping the flexible branch back and forth. When the breeze stopped, the little fly was still there!
