There was a lot of fallen timber in the area, covered by a thick mass of allocasuarina needles, in which these fungi seemed to be growing. The stem on the trumpet-like fungus was very long

Looks like Hydnellum auratile. A similar species is Phellodon niger except that species is black-grey unlike yours which is brown. Well spotted.
