User's notes

This is Simplicia cornicalis Fabricius, 1794 based on Holloway, 2008 in Moths of Borneo 17. Originally named by Fabricius as Phalaena cornicalis Simplicia cornicalis is not in the Australian Faunal Directory. However, Simplicia caeneusalis Walker, F. 1859 is. Simplicia caeneusalis is a synonym of Simplicia cornicalis, based on Holloway, 2008. The AFD also has Nodaria cornicalis (Fabricius, 1794), this name is also derived from Phalaena cornicalis Fabricius, 1794. Simplicia cornicalis and Nodaria cornicalis are both on BOLD and iNaturalist which is in error as both names are derived from Phalaena cornicalis Fabricius, 1794. Both genera were raised by Guenée, 1854. Deltoïdes et Pyralites. In, Boisduval, J.-A. & Guenée, A. (eds). Histoire Naturelle des Insectes. Species Général des Lépidoptères. Paris : Librarie Encyclopédique de Roret Vol. 8. Simplicia on page 51 and Nodaria on page 63. See Sighting 4596285

From Holloway, 2008 "Taxonomic note. The type of cornicalis, a male in ZMUC, Copenhagen, has been dissected, and the valve shape and aedeagus features show it to be conspecific with caeneusalis. It had already been transferred to Simplicia by Lödl (1999e). Owada (1992) revised the synonymy of the species as caeneusalis and illustrated type material." Simplicia caeneusalis (Walker, 1859) (Sophronia?) is a synonym of Simplicia Cornicalis (Fabricius, 1794) (Phalaena)

AFD recognises Simplicia caeneusalis as a distinct and separate species, and NatureMapr defers to AFD as a higher authority, whatever its limitations.
