User's notes
This is known locally as whiskey grass and is a long-naturalized exotic. A moderately tall plant (photo 5), in this situation (photo 1) it is straggling across a concrete path making the most of no competition for sun. The flowerheads are distinctive, and combine yellow and a rusty-pink colour to great effect. Having seen the flowers close-up (photos 2 & 3), it’s no surprise that they create a dramatic sight when late afternoon’s Summer sun passes through a mass of them on a roadside verge (photo 3 is a miniature taste of that). Photo 4 gives a more detailed view of stems & leaf nodes which have hints of red in them.
