User's notes
Dark plum red coloured bull ants, found carting grains of sand from out of their nest after days of rain. These appear to have 6 body segments (photos 2 & 3). Whilst unlike the standard 3 segments for insects, and as has been observed in other bull ant type sightings, e.g. sightings 4664486 & 4664492, amongst others posted since). These 2 referred sightings are also of ants with similar colourings, i.e. dark plum red head & body with a black abdomen. The pincers seem to be differently coloured again, being neither the one creamy yellow colouring of the ant discernible at Sighting 4664492, nor the one plum red colour seen at sighting 4664486. Instead, it seems to start as a creamy yellow at the base, and become much darker (?plum red?) colour at the tips (photos 1 & 2). Whilst this could be due to whatever type/role of ant this is within its colony, it may also mean that these 3 ‘dark plum red’ ant sightings are each of a different species. Photo 5 shows the entrance to the nest, under a tuft of grass, and the sand they have already moved out of it.
