Hydnum 'repandum group'

The fruitbody at first seems mushroom-like, since there is a cap atop a central (to off-centre) stem. However, instead of gills on the underside of the cap there are densely packed spines. The cap is dry, slightly felty to the touch and may may grow up to 10 centimetres in diameter. The cap and stem are similarly coloured, in shades of cream to pale orange, and the spines are creamy to ochraceous.

The fruitbodies appear on the soil.

Look-alikes

This species group is unmistakeable. There are other 'spined mushrooms' in different colours.
