Austrogautieria sp.

This is a genus of truffle-like fungi. The fruitbodies are roughly spherical and range from about 1 to 3 centimetres in largest dimension. A thick skin surrounds the chambered, spore-bearing interior. The skin may be white(ish), yellow(ish), grey(ish) or brown(ish). The interior colours range from pale to dark shades of olive, green or brown.

These truffles appear in a variety of habitats with native plant species. The genus is native to Australia and New Zealand.   

Look-alikes

Other truffle genera produce fruitbodies with some macroscopic similarities to those of Austrogautieria.  The striking microscopic feature of the genus is the spore ornamentation. The spores have pronounced ridges running along the longer dimension of the spore.
