Tomentellopsis echinospora

This is one of the corticioid fungi, so the fruitbody is a flattish growth and is usually found on the underside of dead wood that is lying on the ground. The fruitbody is a soft, loosely attached sheet, somewhat fluffy or resembling compressed cotton wool and usually with a yellowish tint – but may be yellowish green to brownish.

To be sure of identification a microscopic examination is necessary.

The species is found in many parts of the northern hemisphere and has been found a few times in Australia. It will be interesting to see if a future study of the Australian specimens confirms that they are this species – or if they need to be described as a new, endemic Australian species.
