Coprinellus micaceus group

The caps of Coprinellus micaceus are brownish, 1-3 centimetres in diameter and have a covering of mica-like granules (at least initially, but these may wash off fairly easily). The mushrooms usually appear in large groups and on wood (though sometimes they come from buried wood such as decaying roots).  

Several visually similar species have been reported from various parts of the world and at least one, Coprinellus truncorum, has been found in Australia. Hence, mushrooms with a micaceus-look will be labelled as Coprinellus micaceus group.
