Leucopogon or Styphelia sp. (A Beard-heath)

Crayn, D.M., Hislop, M. & Puente-Lelièvre, C. (5 February 2020), A phylogenetic recircumscription of Styphelia (Ericaceae, Epacridoideae, Styphelieae). Australian Systematic Botany 33(2), placed several Leucopogon species within Styphelia. The paper says species of Styphelia can be distinguished by a combination of five features, as follows: "Styphelia can be readily distinguished in the field and herbarium from other genera in the tribes Oligarrheneae and Styphelieae by the following combination of five features observable with the naked eye or with hand-lens magnification: (1) inflorescences axillary only (terminal inflorescences never present), with new vegetative growth arising from the apex of flowering shoots; (2) winter bud scales absent; (3) corolla lobes densely and uniformly hairy; (4) corolla tube lacking fleshy scales inside (but hair tufts may be present); and (5) fruit a drupe, the endocarp not separating into pyrenes."

It is not always possibly to see these features within some of the images submitted, thus the grouping of the two genus.

Leucopogon or Styphelia sp. is listed in the following regions:

Canberra & Southern Tablelands  |  Hunter Region  |  Central West NSW  |  New South Wales North Coast  |  Hume
