Aethalia:- scattered or crowded subglobose to depressed-spherical or irregular from pressure of other bodies. Colour varies from pink to deep olivaceous brown, with a warted fragile cortex.
Pseudocapillitium:- composed of long branching anastomosing flattened tubes marked with conspicuous transverse folds and wrinkles.
Spores:- Pinkish on mass pale to almost colourless by transmitted light.
Substrate:- Dead wood.
Lycogala epidendrum is a conspicuous and widespread myxomycete that has not undergone taxonomic revision for more than a century. A detailed study of the peridium of fruiting bodies collected in Europe, Asia, North and Central America, and Australia has revealed at least 21 morphotypes and 39 ribogroups that are included within the general name L. epidendrum.
