Phaulacridium vittatum
Phaulacridium vittatum (Wingless Grasshopper)
Family Acrididae. A common southern Australian species that has two distinct forms for wing length, a brachypterous (short-winged) form and a macropterous (fully winged) form; the short-winged form, which has given rise to the misleading common name of 'Wingless Grasshopper', consititutes 80-90% of the population. Additionally, there are several colour forms.
This species can erupt in plague numbers in certain years and defoliate crop and pasture plants, and even shrubs and small trees.
