Erythraeidae (family) (Erythraeid mite)

The larvae of erythraeid mites are external parasites of various other terrestrial arthropods such as insects and arachnids. The adults, which are rather large for mites, are free-living predators. These mites are often bright red, perhaps indicating to vertebrate predators, such as birds and reptiles, that they taste bad.
