The larvae of erythraeid mites are external parasites of various other terrestrial arthropods such as insects and arachnids. The adults, which are rather large for mites, are free-living predators. These mites are often bright red, perhaps indicating to vertebrate predators, such as birds and reptiles, that they taste bad.
