Since the start of the 2023 Frogwatch, I have walked through the park at night and no frogs have been calling. Only 32mm of rain fell during October (Canberra Airport) and was not enough to provide in water in the swales. This compares with the exceptionally wet October 2022 when the airport received 166mm and many species of frogs had moved into the swales from Mt Majura Reserve. Each of the swales has 2-4 clusters of rocks placed along the sand-filled channel built in the base of the swales. Thick clumps of Junca and Cyperus reed species have established in most swales. It is assumed the frogs have burrowed well into the sand under the rocks and reeds where the ground would be slightly damp. Hopefully they will survive until the next heavy rainfall. Monitoring will be done when such events occur.
