In the genus Psilocybe, the cap radically changes from brown to yellow or white as the the cap dries. There is often a whitish fringe along the gill edge and many develope a fibrillose annular zone in the upper regions if the stem that is derived from the partial veil, which is usually dusted with the purple-brown spores as the fungi matures..

These mushrooms are usually slender, with conical to hemispheric caps often bearing a pointed umbo.

The stem and basal mycelium readily turn blue when bruised or handled.
