These fungi are mycoparasites. That is they occur on other fungi as parasites they also act as decomposers at the same time. The fact that they involve two types of fungi is a fascinating demonstration of the diversity of ways in which fungi have evolved to survive.
The Hypomyces is the most common genus of mycoparasites. It may be seen in various shades of cream through to bright yellow and intense oranges.
When they infect another fungus a pale mould appears to spread over the surface of the infected fungus untill the fungus is completely covered. The fungus often becomes distorted and looks like it has been wrapped in a dense cottony layer.
The groups of fungi most effected are 'bolete' type fungi and the Russulaceae (Russulas and Lactarius/Lactifluus)
