These look like moth caterpillars, maybe Oecophoridae of which there are numerous species. Some of them eat dead gum leaves and shelter under bark. See http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/oeco/oecophoridae-cats.html .

The pairs of dark dorsal spots looks more like Pyraloidea. Can you to take them into protective custody and rear them to adults to determine the species?
