The caterpillars live in a conical case covered with small pieces of chewed bark, very like that of some Lepidoscia species, but different in having a splayed opening.
The adults are grey with a variable pattern of darker and lighter blotches or speckles. The moths are similar in size to Lepidoscia saxosa, which has narrower forewings and is usually plain mottled grey-brown without the darker and lighter blotches or speckles of C. guildingi.
